The birth of the Republic of Venice. Founded in AD630. Established as a refuge from the terror of Goths, the ancient island of Torcello became a thriving colony, with palaces, churches and a population reaching 20, 000. Today only 60 residents remain. The Byzantine cathedral, the church of Santa Forsca and Attila the Hun’s marble throne are the remnants of its former glory.
