Description

Bought in 1949, the canal side palace became Peggy Guggenheim’s home during the last 30 years of her life. Patron to the Arts, the collection consists of over 200 paintings and sculptures of the modern art of her time. Marini’s ‘Angel of the city’, Brancusi’s ‘Maiastra’ and Henry Moore’s ‘Three Standing Figures’. Yuko Ono’s ‘Wish Tree’ at the foot of Peggy’s grave and the Byzantine Throne chair are all iconic symbols of the dedication, perseverance and respect she had for cultivating the arts. Recognised as a major force in the early modern art world she was honored by the Venetians with the nickname “La Dogaressa” (Female leader to the level of wife of a Doge) A testament to her support she bequeathed the collection to the Guggenheim Foundation on the stipulation that it was always to remain in Venice.
