Description
‘Coastal Clear’ was inspired by the coastline of the Mornington Peninsula. Always chasing a colourful palette, I discovered the atmospheric hues of this area during a trip along the south Victorian coastline.
I was excited to discover the luminous colour in this area. In some ways it reminded me of the soft tones of French shores and of the magic light of Venice. But this light on the Peninsula is unique. It glows from beneath the surface. Like a crystal, these colours refract moment by moment.
I was also drawn to the floating edges of the shoreline. These high hills and rocky paths seem to float above the azure seas. This subject was perfect for my ‘Fragmatism®’ style, where images float and merge into each other, and beauty is often camouflaged. The process of colour application throughout my aquascapes has evolved via a layering of fine veneers of oil paint in certain areas. Each layer must cure before the next is applied. This results in a richly coloured surface that glows through the layers.
There are many reasons why we humans flock to the coastal shores. For many, it provides a clarity and a calmness. The title of this piece ‘Crystal Clear’ stands as a descriptive of location as well as a clarification of thought. Looking out, into the big blue, offers a viewpoint that allows us to refocus our perspective. In search for clarity, the path is often filled with highs, lows and depths much like the coastlines of the Peninsula. As an artist, this search is a constant throughout my artistic development.
This piece forms part of my ‘Coastal’ Collection. It celebrates our love for the water’s edge and how it can nourish our existence. My intentions in creating this artwork is that it may offer you a place to breathe, a space to gather your thoughts, and a moment to pause and take in the beauty that sits beyond the horizon.
