Description
‘Peninsula’s Embrace’ is a coastal painting. Combining land and sea, compiled of cool tones of blue, mauve and umber. Transparent layers in the ocean are contrasted with textural coastlines. A signature piece showcasing Ballard’s unique style called Fragmatism.
It was inspired by the beautiful coastlines of the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. It is not of just one place but the culmination of the elements that struck a cord with me. The coastline is steep and often the natural bushland grows right up to the edge. These guys are my cliff hangers.
This area has been an aquatic playground to many over the years, a holiday haven,
speckled with tiny boat sheds and lots of little inlets, busy with action. The place feels quite magical. The atmosphere has a gentle glow. There is a harmony here that feels like the landscape is smiling back at you.
Even when I was painting this, choosing the colours and creating the textures, it felt like the shapes were giving me a big hug. And that’s why this piece is called ‘Peninsula’s Embrace‘. Where you can escape on one of those little boats or look out from the trees and dream of sunny days and quiet waterways.
